Immanuel Wilkins is the next youthful phenom to visit us @exuberance and we are thrilled.
Like Isaiah J. Thompson and Joseph Block, another Juilliard genius—saxophonist, composer and arranger. Supportive mother and father, dancer and trombonist respectively. Early mentor in Clef Club’s Lovett Hines, who provided Immanuel with both musical and professional guidance. “Besides exposing me to the history of this music and giving me the fundamentals, Mr. Hines hooked me up with performers like Edgar Bateman and Sid Simmons. I owe everything to him,” Wilkins says.
Among his influences, the church. He was playing piano in his church at age 8. Henry Threadgill, Bird, Ornette, Steve Coleman and Keith Jarrett—especially the American Quartet with Charlie Haden and Dewey Redman. “That group is my model.”...
