About

A variation on a theme first performed in Crete earlier this year, ‘An Evening With The Whiteheads’ brings together saxophonist/composer father Tim with singer/guitarist/composer daughter Hattie, to play their own and other favourite songs and compositions. Renowned throughout the UK, Europe and the USA the multi-award-winning Tim Whitehead is a remarkable performer and composer with a dazzling CV. From work in the 70’s with Ian Carr’s “Nucleus” and “Graham Collier Music” (winning the Young Jazz Musician of the Year Award on the way), and in the 80's with groundbreaking big band Loose Tubes and the likes of John Parricelli, Django Bates, Nic France and Pete Jacobsen, to the critically acclaimed albums he made in the 90's, winning The Andrew Milne Award for Jazz, as well as the BBC Music Magazine Jazz Album of the Year, Tim has established himself as an international musician of considerable note. More recently, Tim has collaborated with renowned contemporary classical composer Colin Riley and was the first ever musician to be made Artist in Residence at Tate Britain, resulting in a number of brilliant gigs, a highly acclaimed album “Colour Beginnings” and a short-listing for the British Composer Of The Year Award in 2010. Originally inspired by the sounds of contemporary folk artists such as James Taylor, Nick Drake, John Martyn and Joni Mitchell, these days London based singer/songwriter Hattie Whitehead takes influence from both old and new music, drawing upon the eclectic range of musical styles she has been surrounded by throughout her life. Distinguished by a pure vocal tone and crystal clear delivery Hattie has developed a style that is melodic, soulful and heartfelt. The release of her debut EP 'Home' prompted radio play from stations including BBC and Amazing Radio, and a sell-out launch gig at St Pancras Old Church in London. Highlights of Hattie's journey since the release of 'Home' have included bookings at top UK festivals such as Latitude, Secret Garden Party, Wilderness, Field Day and Cambridge Folk Festival, support for up and coming and established artists such as Howard Rose and Beth Rowley and winning third prize in Glastonbury's Emerging Talent Competition 2016. Now working on her next release, Hattie's eagerness to push boundaries with her music and cross genres has led her to create tracks that hold folk roots whilst gesturing towards a brand new fresh and powerful sound. The gig this evening will feature songs from one of the greatest popular composers of all time, Burt Bacharach, arranged and re-imagined by Tim and Hattie. Tim says “I love Hattie’s approach to singing-it's straight from the shoulder, fuelled by emotional intelligence and anchored in great phrasing, secure intonation and good time". Tim and Hattie are very old friends of the Club and so it is with great pleasure we welcome them back for this special evening. Also featured tonight will be George Brown Griffiths on piano. Not to be missed!...
