“We’re re-creating electronic music on acoustic instruments” says GoGo Penguin’s pianist Chris Illingworth of the Manchester trio’s modus operandi on their latest album, Man Made Object. It’s a good summary, but heard live, there’s so much more, too: the shuddering sub-bass oomph of double-bassist Nick Blacka’s seismic-sounding riffs meshed with the off-kilter, broken-beat rhythms of drummer Rob Turner’s percussive attack, and Illingworth’s classical/minimalist pianistic patterns. Now signed to Blue Note Records and playing the biggest gigs going (Coachella, A Love Supreme), GoGo Penguin is about to hit an absolute peak.
