A very very special night in store as one of the worlds most recognised jazz saxophonists performs at Jamm in support of the Mary Seacole Memorial Statue Appeal.
No one better embodies the dramatic transformation in the British Jazz scene over the past twenty years than Courtney Pine. The saxophonist heads a new generation of exciting and innovative musicians who have chosen to turn their talents to the demanding requirements of jazz music, in all its shapes and forms. This special show will feature tracks from Courtney's latest album 'House of Legends and will be a unique chance to see this award winning artist up close and personal in the intimate surroundings of Brixton Jamm, an opportunity that does not come around very often!
Courtney Pine has been a long time supporter of the appeal to recognise the work of Mary Seacole who was voted into first place in an online poll of 100 Great Black Britons in 2004. Thousands of people recently signed a petition calling for Education Secretary Michael Gove to reverse his decision to remove Mary Seacole form the National Curriculum for schools. The support for an incredible woman who is an important part of our history was undeniable, in fact, this decision has since been reversed and her place on the National Curriculum rightly remains.
Speaking about the Show Courtney Pine said 'This a wonderful opportunity for me to support the appeal as I have been a long time supporter and it is great that all the musicians and the venue have waived fees in order to make this happen. I am very pleased to playing this show and hope that people can come out and support this cause'.
This exciting one off event, which is also being supported by UNISON, offers one of the finest Jazz talents in the world, performing for a great cause. For all lovers of Jazz, live music, culture and history, this is an event not to be missed so make sure you do not miss out on what will be a wonderful occasion.
